Monk’s spell on Teesside was remembered for several big-money signings in the summer of 2017 as the club’s transfer strategy backfired significantly. But what has happened to the players who joined Boro during that spell? How many have actually been a success? Scroll down and flick through our picture gallery to see the full list and make your mind up:
9. Lewis Baker
A potentially exciting loan deal which never took off. Baker joined Boro from Chelsea after racking up several first-team games for Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem. Yet the playmaker wasn't a first-team regular under Garry Monk or Tony Pulis, making just 14 appearances for the Teessiders in all competitions. Baker remains a Chelsea player following loan spells at Leeds, Reading and German side Fortuna Dusseldorf with limited success. Photo: INA FASSBENDER
10. Marvin Johnson
At the start of this season, Johnson's Boro career appeared in doubt following a loan spell at Sheffield United. He returned to the Riverside following the appointment of Jonathan Woodgate and, to the winger's credit, has performed well when called upon. Johnson's contract is set to expire this summer, though with his future up in the air. Photo: Lewis Storey
11. Connor Roberts
After joining Boro on loan from Swansea, the young full-back, now 24, played just a handful of games for the Teessiders. Since then he has become a key player at the Liberty Stadium and has broken into the Welsh national team. Photo: Michael Steele
