We’ve rounded up 10 of the top things to do if you’re looking for some inspiration.
9. Pop Up Collective, Mackies Corner, Sunderland
Pop Up Collective North East are the latest artists to make use of display space at Mackie’s Corner - and you can catch their display until Friday. The landmark building – built in 1845 on the site of a large house owned by Dr William Clanny, inventor of the miners' safety lamp – is undergoing a major chapter of change with plans in place to turn it into a business hub. Sunderland University graduates Jessica Browne, 23, Jason Lund, 26, and Poppy Middlemas, 23, – aka Pop Up Collective North East – have set up a pop-up exhibition CHAOS in the workshop space. Jessica said: “This is our introductory show as a collective but we have plans in the future to use unusual spaces. It’s the first time we’ve actually done a show since graduating, as there isn’t many outlets. So the collective is also about helping other graduates. Moving forward, we don’t need traditional space to exhibit our work, we’re looking at utilising parks and possibly a graveyard at Halloween. CHAOS is open at Mackie’s Workshop until Friday 23rd 11am-1pm. Photo: Stu Norton
The Dolly Mixtures are at The Customs House until August 31. The musical is being brought back to the stage as part of The Customs House’s 25 th anniversary celebrations. Six members of the original cast are returning for the revival of the show, which celebrates the achievements of a group of north east women who broke the showbiz mould to raise funds for cancer research in the 1970s and 1980s. The women raised more than £100,000 during their time together and at the end of the original run of the play, in August 2016, they were honoured with a lifetime achievement award by Cancer Research UK.
