Education secretary Bridget Philipson praises the 'brilliant' work of Hartlepool's schools at summit

Education secretary Bridget Philipson praised the “brilliant” work happening in Hartlepool schools to give every child the best start in life.

The government minister spoke at an Education Summit which saw 150 invited guests come together to share ideas and pave the way for building the best future for all of Hartlepool’s children and young people.

Inclusion was at the heart of the event held in Hartlepool Town Hall Theatre.

Featuring speakers from the world of education and inclusion it was attended by town MP Jonathan Brash – a former teacher himself – as well as head teachers, Parent Carer Forum members, local pupils, councillors and numerous professionals.

Ms Philipson told the summit: “Hartlepool has pockets of deprivation as high as any in the country and it’s fair share of challenges.

“But I share your ambition for all children and young people here that background should be no barrier to getting on in life and no barrier to success.

“And I’ve been really encouraged to see the brilliant work that you are doing to change the narrative on this for children from here and across the North East.”

She highlighted the government’s newly launched Schools White Paper which includes a range of planned reforms and investment including a £1.6bn Inclusive Mainstream Fund.

Councillor Melanie Morley, chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s children’s services committee, said: “Inclusion is not an add‑on for us. It must be the foundation of everything we do.

"By working as one system, sharing our skills and listening to the experiences of children, families and practitioners, we can create the conditions where every young person feels they belong, are understood and can thrive.”
