A Hartlepool Borough Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm Councillor Brenda Loynes, the Ceremonial Mayor of Hartlepool, has contracted coronavirus.

“Councillor Loynes was in hospital for a procedure where she will now stay for a period of isolation.

“She is responding well to treatment and everyone at Hartlepool Borough Council sends their very best wishes for a speedy recovery.”

Coun Loynes represents the Rural West ward, and is a member of the Conservative party.
