I went on a picture perfect autumn glamping getaway in Northumberland where you can soak in your own spa

You can soak in your own spa under the stars at this luxury glamping getaway.

Marshmallows going gooey in submission over a roaring fire and the crunch of golden leaves under your feet - this was a picture perfect autumn getaway brought to life.

A secluded cabin surrounded by mature trees and overlooking a wild grass meadow, our room for the night at Woodland Chase felt a world away from civilisation but is actually a few minutes drive off the A1, not far from the village of Felton.

The collection of four glamping accommodation - a treehouse, a spa cabin and two cabins - was created from former farmland to cater for Northumberland’s increasingly-popular staycation market and best of all if you’re after a super relaxing getaway - it’s adults only.

There’s a good amount of space between the treehouse and its neighbouring three cabins to ramp up the seclusion, with us staying in The Fieldhouse and spa cabin.

After just under an hour’s drive from Sunderland, I was greeted by owner Jill for whom Woodland Chase has been a real labour of love, with Old Felton Farm, part of its land used to create the glamping getaway, in the family for more than 100 years.

She showed me to our cabin, a spacious enough home-from-home for two with a double bed, remarkably well-equipped kitchen, roll top bath, shower and leather chairs to sink into in front of the log burner.

As if the luxury inside bathroom, complete with rich scented toiletries from Northumberland-based Dovecote, wasn’t enough, you can also brave the outdoor shower, as well as a cold dunk bucket.

Still not relaxed to the max? Why not fire up the wood-fired hot tub and sauna and really escape the hustle bustle of the everyday life in your own rustic haven.

This spa cabin only opened a couple of years ago but felt brand new, with everything thought of, from a host of games and a marshmallow fork capable of holding six at once to well-stocked kitchen cupboards and a combi microwave oven and additional hob.

You also get a welcome basket with locally-made cheese, biscuits and snacks, which is another lovely, homely touch. Jill informed me she can tailor the baskets for special occasions, too.

It’s all been tastefully done and we loved the little pumpkins added to the decor for the autumnal season. It felt like real love had been poured into the place, as opposed to yet another faceless big chain place to stay.

There’s no TV, but this is a cabin that encourage you to put down your appliances and take in the surroundings - even a resident heron flew past as we settled into our seats overlooking the field and namesake woodland. I’d say it encourages you to go back to nature, but Woodland Chase really puts the glamour into glamping.

Wifi is also good so, fear not, you don’t have to escape the real world altogether.

The outdoor spa requires some preparation, with the wood fired hot tub taking two hours to heat up and the sauna around half an hour, but the cabin came well stocked with wood and kindling.

There’s also plenty of outdoor seating and a fire pit while you wait, with marshmallows and s’mores provided for snacks.

Despite the cabins sharing an albeit large plot of land, you don’t notice the other residents at all, with only the faint hum of the A1 in the distance a reminder of other folk.

After a plunge, we retired to the indoor fire for a camembert and red wine and to gossip the night away.

The next morning, feeling refreshed, we had a quick drive into Felton, a small but pleasant village for a morning’s walk with a Red Fox cafe and lovely art gallery and shop. We enjoyed a good natter with the artists in there.

We had to get back to the noise of the city that afternoon for work, but this is a good gateway from which to explore Northumberland for those able to enjoy this picture-perfect rustic haven for longer.

*The starting price for a stay at Woodland Chase is from £590 for a two night stay in the main cabins with the spa cabin starting from £770 for a two night stay for two.

There’s a three night stay policy midweek, but you can stay for two nights on Friday - Sunday, with discounts available for four nights.

It’s adult only glamping, with Crofter’s Cabin a dog-friendly cabin. More at www.woodlandchaseglamping.co.uk.

Note, the glamping spot is taking a break from Monday 9th November 2026 to Monday 1st February 2027.
