The full-back initially joined Boro in 2016 from Cardiff City, having represented the Old Trafford giants between 2008 and 2014.

He was reportedly unhappy at the Riverside Stadium and keen to seal a move away from the club in January, but has battled his way back in to contention under Tony Pulis.

While his last start came in a 2-0 win over Bolton on Boxing Day, the Brazilian has made an impact off the bench in recent weeks.

And with his contract due to expire this summer, Boro have triggered a clause in his contract who will see him stay on Teesside until 2019.

Fabio took to Instagram to confirm the news, posting: "many Boro fans ask me about my situation in the club, Middlesbrough have already activated a option in my contract for another year".
