Hartlepool United defender recalled from loan spell at National League North side

Hartlepool United have recalled defender Louis Stephenson from his loan spell with National League North side Buxton.

The 20-year-old, who scored once in 10 games for the Bucks, becomes the second player to return to Victoria Park following a loan spell this week after versatile teenager Campbell Darcy was called back from a successful stint with Northern Premier League Premier Division outfit Hebburn Town.

After manager Nicky Featherstone, a former teammate of Stephenson's, revealed he was planning "to make changes" ahead of this weekend's FA Trophy clash against Northern Premier League Division One Midlands side Anstey Nomads, many fans are speculating that the pair could be in line for their first Pools appearances of the campaign.

Since making his professional debut during an FA Cup win over Harrogate in November 2022, the hugely popular Stephenson has endured a rollercoaster few years at Pools.

Last season in particular proved challenging for the youngster, who found himself in the side at the start of the season before falling out of favour altogether and spending time on loan at the likes of Blyth Spartans, where he failed to make much of an impression, and Whitby Town.

Things didn't get much easier for the energetic full-back after he was brought back into the fold by Anthony Limbrick and Stephenson left the pitch in visible distress after missing a gilt-edged chance to score the winner during February's goalless draw with Maidenhead, his first appearance in six-and-a-half months.

Yet Limbrick showed considerable faith in the defender, handing him a start as Pools took on Altrincham the following week and continuing to pick him for the remainder of the campaign.

True, there were highs as well as lows, not least when his needless red card, the first of his fledgling career, cost Pools against Dagenham and Redbridge in April, but there was a feeling among fans that he'd done enough to warrant a place in the first team squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

New manager Simon Grayson, however, didn't seem to share the views of many supporters and Stephenson is still to make a senior Pools appearance this term despite featuring regularly in pre-season.
