Hartlepool United star praised for mentality after Newcastle United departure

Hartlepool United midfielder Jamie Miley has been praised for the attitude he showed following his departure from Newcastle United.

Hartlepool United midfielder Jamie Miley has shown young players how to react after leaving a Premier League club - according to former Pools team-mate Adam Campbell.

The former Newcastle United academy product made a permanent move away from his boyhood club when he joined Pools in January 2025 before marking his debut with a dramatic late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Braintree Town just days later. Miley has impressed throughout his time at the Prestige Group Stadium and will hope to impress new head coach Lee Clark when preparations for his first season in charge get underway this month.

At 22, Miley now appears ready to firmly establish himself as a key figure within the Pools side as he continues to move on from his departure from Newcastle - and Campbell believes the attitude shown by the former Magpies youngster shows progress and success can be found after a Premier League dream has come to an end.

He told The Mail: “You have to be a good footballer. It’s the mindset before you go into an EFL or National League club. At a Premier League club, you go in, you get your breakfast, you get your lunch, you have nice facilities, nice gyms and then all of sudden, you’re elsewhere and you don’t always get that. You’re training on an artificial pitch or a grass pitch that’s not as flat. It’s getting used to that, it’s having that mentality to take it in your stride. It’s an attitude thing.

“Jamie Miley is a good example at Hartlepool. He left Newcastle, he came in, and his mindset was always ‘right I’m going to show everyone I’m the best player at this level and I’m going to kick on. That’s massive because it can go one of two ways when you leave a category one academy. You can think why am I here or you can say I’m going to show everyone what I’m about and look to move my way back up. That is what Jamie is doing.”
