Jordan Hugill is targeting double figures for Hartlepool United this season - but is happy to do the ‘dirty work’ for Pools this campaign.
With a free weekend in the league calendar after they were dumped out of the FA Cup at the fourth qualifying round stage by Marine, the Pools squad will instead be treated to an in-house game at the club’s Maiden Castle training base on Saturday. With Pools battling at the wrong end of the National League table, it is chance for Pete Wild and his squad to continue the hard work on the training pitch and take stock.
Reflecting on his targets for Pools, Hugill said: “As a player, I think throughout my career my target is to get double figures in goals. So, that's whatever stage of the season, those are my targets. So, whether that's by Christmas, by the end of the season, that's what I want ultimately.
“I bring more than just goals to a team. I do all the dirty work that not a lot of people see and help people along the way and I bring people with me. So, if I can do that and then hopefully get us up the league then brilliant, I've done my job,” he told Hartlepool Life.
On his leadership role within the dressing room, does that come naturally to him? Hugill added: “I think that's something that's just come from within, it's come natural due to the ages of the players in the changing room.
“They kind of look to me because I'm the oldest in the squad by quite a way but, I'm the oldest and I'm probably the most experienced within the changing room. So, I think people look towards me for that.”
Last Saturday, Hartlepool United were on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller at league leaders Boreham Wood. Matt Rush scored a second-half stoppage-time winner to settle a topsy-turvy 4-3 thriller with Pools. The defeat leaves Pools fourth bottom with 15 points from 16 National League games.
