George Friend's departure confirmed as popular defender turns down Middlesbrough deal to join Birmingham City
The 32-year-old joined Boro from Doncaster Rovers in 2012 and has gone on to make 299 appearances at the Riverside Stadium.
He also scored ten times during his eight years in the North East, during which he helped Boro back to the Premier League while also playing a key role in the local community.

Hide AdFriend was offered a new deal on Teesside but turned down the club’s offer – in order to sign for Aitor Karanka’s Birmingham City, where he becomes the Spaniard’s first signing after taking over from Pep Clotet.
The Blues have handed the versatile defender a two-year deal, with an option, at St Andrew’s Stadium.
In a statement confirming his departure, Middlesbrough said: “Everyone connected with MFC would like to wish George all the best for the future.”
