Boro debutant Chuba Akpom opened the scoring after 19 minutes, heading home a Paddy McNair corner, before Bright Osayi-Samuel drew the hosts level nine minutes later.

Both Rangers boss Mark Warburton and Boro assistant Kevin Blackwell felt their sides should have been awarded a penalty – and most supporters agreed with their verdicts.

The hosts saw a spot kick turned down when Luke Amos’ shot appeared to hit George Saville on the arm.

Moments later, Boro’s Grant Hall was tugged down in the box but nothing was given.

Fans were also glad to see Akpom score his first goal for the club.

Here are some of the responses from social media:

@Smithy_MFC84: Got to take the positives, it’s a point and another game without defeat, but we need a win sooner rather than later. Huge plus today was the impact of Akpom, always good to get a debut goal.

@CorkingNeil: Fair point, but we need a win now as we are in the bottom half of the table, shame we couldn’t keep the lead

@wanaldinho: Good point all in all. Bad ref, missed changes again, bad defence and horrendous goalkeeping, How many times is Britt going to miss golden chances by falling over the ball. Akpom and Fletch all the way for me.

@bryceimiela: Ref was shocking. Britt should have scored also. Fair result overall

@jeccles94: A downgrade compared to last week's performance but a points a point, we look good when going forward but were still far too shaky at the back

@alexutfb_: Poor championship ref as per, missed plenty of chances, not a bad point

@MatthewBye13: I’ll take a draw away from home. Onto Barnsley next where we can avenge the other week! #UTB

@Neeks_77: A draw is a good result, another performance put in against a stronger side, first away point of the season, onwards and upwards

@We_are_Boro: Johnson struggling again as LB/LWB, Spence having an off day, losing the ball too often. Scrappy game, which the ref isn't helping. Bettinelli should've done better with their goal. Needs to be better in the second half.
