Kim Hellberg among Middlesbrough trio nominated for major EFL awards
Boro are well-represented on the shortlists for this season's EFL Awards.
Middlesbrough boss Kim Hellberg has been named on the three-man shortlist for the EFL Championship Manager of the Season Award.
Hellberg took the role in late November following Rob Edwards’ controversial exit to Wolves. Despite some recent poor form - failing to win any of their last five matches (3D, 2L) - Boro are still well in the promotion mix, sitting third in the table and level on points with second-place Ipswich Town, who have two games in hand.
Millwall join the pair on 72 points, while the likes of Hull (68 points) and Southampton (66 points) cannot be discounted from automatic promotion yet.
Hellberg has taken charge of 24 Championship matches so far, clocking 42 points with a record of 12 wins, six draws and six defeats.
The favourite to take the award is surely Frank Lampard, whose Coventry City side are 12 points clear at the top of the table and almost an inevitability for automatic promotion. Joining Lampard and Hellberg to round off the short list are Hull’s Sergej Jakirovic and Millwall’s Alex Neil, with both their sides joining Boro in the playoff places at present.
Hayden Hackney joins Kim Hellberg on EFL awards shortlist
Boro have been further represented in the awards shortlists for 2025/26, with midfielder and vice-captain Hayden Hackney up for the Player of the Season gong.
The England youth international has been utterly instrumental to Boro’s promotion push, registering five goals and a team-high seven assists so far, while also sitting first among his teammates in a host of key metrics, including chances created (83), take-ons completed (54) and passes completed (2,103).
Hackney will go up against Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, Swansea City striker and Championship top scorer Zan Vipotnik, and Millwall winger Femi Azeez for the crown.
Boro head of academy operations Wendy Thomas has also been nominated for the EFL Club Employee award.
The winners of every EFL award will be announced at the annual ceremony on Sunday, 19th April, with Sky Sports broadcasting proceedings live from 8:30pm.
For now, Boro’s focus will remain on getting their promotion push back on track, starting with their home tie against relegation-battling Portsmouth on Saturday.
