MP Jonathan Brash says budget will help thousands of Hartlepool households and businesses

More than 40,000 households in Hartlepool are set to be better off as a result of Wednesday’s budget, according to the town’s MP.

Labour’s Jonathan Brash welcomed a series of announcements on Wednesday by Chancellor John Healey designed to give families and businesses “breathing room” amid ongoing financial challenges.

One is a new £100 household energy Payment to be paid to eligible households in council tax bands A to D in England from January next year.

In Hartlepool, around 42,640 properties were rated in bands A to D at the end of March 2026 and will be eligible for the payment.

Other announcements include the temporary 0% VAT rate on electricity being extended until June 30, 2027, while Ofgem will be asked to abolish gas standing charges and move those costs into unit rates, giving households greater control over their bills.

For drivers, a 5 pence fuel duty cut has been extended and fuel duty rates frozen until 1 July next year.

Mr Brash also says around 164 retail, hospitality and leisure properties in Hartlepool are expected to benefit from a real terms business rates freeze in 2027-28 and 2028-29.

It is part of a £1 billion business rates package for businesses and high streets.

Mr Brash said: “People across Hartlepool are working hard, but too many are still struggling with the cost of heating their home, doing the weekly shop and getting to work.

“They need practical help that makes a difference to their household budget. The £100 energy payment, continued support with electricity bills and the fuel duty freeze will give families some breathing space.

“Support with business rates will also help the shops, pubs and cafés that provide local jobs and keep our town centre going.”

Housing also featured in the budget with £4.7 billion expected to support around 70,000 first time buyers, plus an additional £1.5 billion for social and affordable housing, intended to deliver around 10,000 more homes in England.

And there will be an additional £20 billion for the National Wealth Fund and British Business Bank to help drive investment alongside £1.85 billion for growing businesses and a new Founders’ Relief to back entrepreneurs and early investors.

Mr Brash added: “Hartlepool needs good jobs, decent homes and opportunities for our young people. I will keep pushing to make sure the investment announced in this Budget reaches our town and delivers for local people.

“These are Labour decisions: Backing families and businesses now while building a stronger future for Hartlepool.”
