Hartlepool United youngster extends loan at Northern Premier League title-chasers until end of season

Hartlepool United defender Campbell Darcy's loan with Northern Premier League Premier Division leaders Hebburn Town has been extended until the end of the season, Pools have confirmed.

The versatile 19-year-old, who can operate at right-back, centre-half or in a more advanced midfield role, has impressed throughout the campaign with the Hornets, who are a point clear of second-placed Hednesford despite drawing their last three matches. In spite of having spent most of his time at Pools in defence, Darcy appears to have thrived in a more attack-minded midfield role during his time with the Northern Premier League title-chasers.

The youngster first signed for Hebburn in September, scoring on his first start for Daniel Moore's side. After having his initial 28-day loan deal extended into December, Darcy returned to Victoria Park and made his one and only Pools appearance this season from the bench during the humiliating FA Trophy defeat at the hands of Northern Premier League Division One Midlands side Anstey Nomads. Despite the bitter disappointment of one of the most ignominious results in the club's entire history, manager Nicky Featherstone admitted he was "buzzing" for the teenager after he scored his first Pools goal, turning home a late consolation.

Even so, Darcy didn't manage to do enough to convince Featherstone he deserved a more regular place in the first team squad and returned to the Hornets last month alongside Pools attacker Kian Foreman. Darcy is now set to spend the rest of the season at the Hebburn Sports and Social Ground as he hopes to inspire Moore's side to promotion.

Despite being handed his Pools debut as an 85th minute substitute against Championship side Stoke City in the FA Cup in January 2023, Darcy has struggled to break into the first team picture at Victoria Park, making just a handful of substitute appearances since then. The youngster made successive cameos from the bench at the back end of the 2023/24 season under Kevin Phillips and had been set to make his first Pools start on the final day of the campaign against already relegated Dorking Wanderers, only to miss out altogether after rolling his ankle in training.

Even though he received glowing reviews from head coach Anthony Limbrick and Pools skipper Tom Parkes, who hailed him as "a brilliant footballer" with "loads of potential", last term, Darcy made just one further substitute appearance in the 2024/25 campaign while he hasn't featured at all in the National League this season.

Speaking to Hebburn's official club website, Moore was full of praise for Darcy's impact so far this term.

"Campbell has been brilliant since coming in and he's at home within the squad," he said.

"He is enjoying his football and that's the main thing for me. He's a great kid off the pitch, he's got a smile on his face and I think we're seeing the rewards of that on the pitch."
