Alex Reid reflects on Hartlepool United spell after joining National League rivals Barrow

Former Hartlepool United striker Alex Reid has joined National League newcomers Barrow as they look to bounce back from relegation during the new season.

The 30-year-old frontman joined Pools under former manager Simon Grayson last summer and wasted little time in opening his goalscoring account as he scored a penalty in a 2-0 home win against Braintree Town before scoring in victories against Altrincham and Woking over the following seven days. However, after making a promising start to the season, Reid would not find the net until a 1-1 draw with Wealdstone in mid-November and he ended what would become his first and only season at the Prestige Group Stadium with 12 goals in 41 appearances.

The former Stockport County and Oldham Athletic striker was one of 13 players to depart Pools last month and he will start the new campaign with Barrow after he became Adam Murray’s first summer signing on Monday afternoon - and he immediately reflected on his time at Pools and backed his former club to push for the play-offs once again during the new season.

He told the club’s YouTube channel: “Hartlepool is a massive club. There was a lot of change and a lot of things happening behind the season at Hartlepool and they’re probably in a little bit of a transition period. In terms of location, me and my girlfriend live in Preston, so the travel was a lot. But I have fond memories there, I finished as their top scorer, they’ve got a massive crowd, they’ve just been taken over by a new owner and I’ve got nothing really negative to say. We just missed out on the play-offs and I’m sure they’ll be trying to get in the play-offs again and trying to have as good a season as they can.”

Meanwhile, another former Pools star in the news is defender Luke Waterfall. The 35-year-old has opted to bring down the curtain on his playing career after a spell with Worksop Town and has now been appointed as assistant manager at Pools’ National League rivals Boston United.
