Boro will return to competitive action in five weeks time, yet their squad remains low on numbers following several departures at the end of last season.

Warnock has said he wants to strengthen the spine of his team this summer, yet there’s also an evident lack of wide players in the squad.

One player who would address that is Cardiff winger Junior Hoilett, a player who has just one year left on his contract.

The 30-year-old has worked with Warnock at both QPR and Cardiff and made 41 Championship appearances for the Bluebirds last season.

According to Teesside Live, Boro see Hoilett as a potential summer signing as Warnock looks to bolster his attacking options.

At the other end of the pitch, Portsmouth goalkeeper Alex Bass has also been linked with a move to the Riverside over the last few weeks.

Premier League club Crystal Palace are also said to be interested in the 22-year-old who broke into the Pompey side and kept eight clean sheets last season.

Yet according to Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett, the club haven’t received any offers or enquiries for their players this summer.

“We haven’t had any enquiries or any bids for any of our players,” Jackett told The Portsmouth News.

“We don’t need an unsettled pre-season and don’t want that. If the phone rings and bids come in then we’ll deal with it then.

“But selling our best players is not something we’re wanting to do.

“We understand sometimes that happens, it happens to every club, but in this particular pre-season period, as a manager it’s not something I’m looking for to happen.

“If we can work with all of our squad then we can build towards having hopefully a successful start to our season.”

Finally, another player who is reportedly on Boro’s radar is Northampton defender Charlie Goode.

The 25-year-old centre-back is in high demand after helping the Cobblers win promotion to League One via the play-offs and says he’s aware of recent interest.

Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle, Goode said: "It's something I'm aware of and I hear everything that goes but at the end of the day I play for Northampton and that won't change until my last day at the club.

“My focus is on the pitch. My focus is as normal and I'm just looking forward to the new season. I've loved every minute I've had at this club.

“I came here to get promoted last season and I've helped us achieve that - but it doesn't stop now.

"I've played in League One before and I want to make sure I'm still playing at at least League One level next season so I'm going to give it a real good go."
