Hartlepool VALOUR veterans centre moves a step close as funding increases to £1.5m

Support for veterans in Hartlepool and the surrounding area is set to be boosted thanks to extra government funding.

The East Durham Veterans Trust has been awarded £1.5 million through the government’s VALOUR programme – up from £1 million previously announced.

The money will support the Trust’s work to expand veterans’ services locally, including through the establishment of a dedicated VALOUR centre in Hartlepool.

It will act as a ‘one stop shop’ where veterans can access information and support on a range of important issues including health, housing, employment and wellbeing services.

Andy Cammiss, chief executive of East Durham Veterans Trust, said: “This additional investment will help us strengthen and expand the support we provide to veterans and their families across the area.

“Establishing a dedicated centre in Hartlepool is an important part of that ambition. We want to ensure that no veteran feels they have to navigate the challenges of civilian life alone.

“Its central location will make it accessible to veterans, their families and the wider community.

“Our message to veterans is simple: this centre will be here for you.”

The announcement comes as the lease for the new centre at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre is on the verge of being signed.

Hartlepool MP Jonathan Brash played a central role in securing the location and negotiated a rent-free arrangement for the premises.

He said:

“The nation owes a profound debt of gratitude to the men and women who have served our country.

“I’m absolutely delighted that the Government has increased its funding commitment to East Durham Veterans Trust from £1 million to £1.5 million.

“I’ve worked hard to secure this site rent-free, because I want the resources available to go towards supporting veterans rather than disappearing into property costs.

“This is what putting our Armed Forces community first looks like: practical support, removing barriers and making sure that those who have served can access the help they need, right here in Hartlepool."

Calvin Bailey MBE MP, Minister for Veterans and People, added: “I’ve heard wonderful stories of how the VALOUR centres are making a real difference to people’s lives. Expanding the VALOUR system means even more veterans and their families get the support they deserve.”
