Duncan Watmore pulled a goal back for the visitors shortly after the interval but the Teessiders struggled to test goalkeeper Keiren Westwood on a frustrating evening.

Watmore has now scored five goals in six starts since moving to Boro on a short-term contract in November.

The forward’s performances have certainly caught people’s attention, with Premier League clubs reportedly interested in the 26-year-old.

According to Sky Sports, the forward is attracting interest from top-flight sides ahead of the January transfer window, with Burnley and West Brom – who are managed by Watmore’s ex-Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce – reportedly interested.

Championship trio Swansea, Stoke City and Watford are also said to be keen, yet it’s believed Watmore’s preference is to stay on Teesside.

Boro supporters are certainly keen for Watmore to stay at the Riverside – here’s how some fans reacted after last night’s result:

@OurMFC: Another brilliant goal for Watmore wasn’t enough to overturn a dismal first half performance for #Boro! Not the way we wanted to end the year

@ByronGartry: If Watmore does go...we are stuffed !

@Smithy_MFC84: Poor result, no other way of viewing it. Not the way we wanted to end 2020, but what we’ve seen this year, post Warnock arrival is that we’ve a reason to be positive and we’re looking upwards. Nothing more than a blip.

@justcalledtosay: Two sloppy mistakes/poor defending have lost us that game. I didn’t think we looked awful that apart. We dictated the game but didn’t create enough quality chances. Strange game which I don’t think we deserved to lose on the balance

@Jordanwalker280: How have we not got anything there. Also how on earth is he allowed to ref us

@Matt_Rowney: Watch us lose out on Duncan Watmore cos the 1 time our recruitment team actually find a goal scorer they can't keep him

@BaTeAqua: Unfortunately couldn't take our chances
