Memorial match in honour of beloved Hartlepool footballer and fireman James Parkinson raises thousands for charity
The people of Hartlepool came together to remember a talented local footballer and beloved firefighter at an inaugural football match in his memory.
More than 200 footballers played in a seven-a-side tournament in the first ever Parko's Memorial Day at Grayfields.

It raised an incredible £7,000 for charity in honour of James Parkinson, who died suddenly last September aged just 47.
He loved football, music and, above all, his family and friends.

Alongside the football, the crowds were entertained by a host of live musicians and fundraising activities.
It is set to become an annual event and the money raised will be divided between the Fire Fighters 100 Lottery and Great North Air Ambulance Service.
Chris Birkbeck, James' long-term friend and work colleague, said: “James was an exceptional friend and colleague, but more than anything, he was just an exceptional person.
“The day was really about celebrating James by bringing together a few of his favourite things – football, music and, of course, a few drinks!
“More than anything, though, it was about getting everyone together, having a laugh, swapping stories and remembering James in the way we all knew him.
“To raise over £7,000 in our first year was unbelievable. We're definitely going to make it an annual event.
“It's a chance to bring everyone together, support some brilliant causes and, most importantly, remember a top bloke and a great friend."
The day was made possible by everyone who gave up their time to help, alongside FC Hartlepool and The Pavilion Bar at Grayfields.
The tournament was fittingly won by Cheese and Stairs FC, a team of James' mates, beating Dads and Lads 1-0 in the final.
A Player of the Tournament trophy named The Wizard in honour of James, was won by Peter Twidale and presented to him by James' daughter, Violet.
James’ wife Sarah Parkinson was touched by the gratitude shown by the community.
She said: "A massive thank you to everyone who came along, played, donated, bought raffle and tombola tickets, volunteered or supported us in any way – you made the day what it was.
“Thank you all, we think we did James proud."
The event was proudly supported by a host of generous local business sponsors, the Fire Brigade Union and senior Cleveland Fire Brigade management.
