Apology call

Boris Johnson came to Newcastle on April 16.

He told us that Britain gives the EU £20billion a year and Brussels bureaucrats decide how to spend it.

Even then it had already been pointed out many times that this was a discredited figure.

Since then Sir Andrew Dilnot, chair of the UK Statistics Authority, has described the figure (in the more often-used form of £350million a week, its approximate equivalent), with polite understatement, as potentially misleading.

Now Sir John Major has called it a demonstrable untruth.

It is time for Boris Johnson to apologise to the people of the North East for this, and for Vote Leave to stop peddling this grossly exaggerated figure.
